ICAN-UK attended and spoke at a meeting of Soka Gakkai International on 6th August to mark Hiroshima Day.
The event, organised by the UK branch of the international Buddhist organisation, featured talks on nuclear weapons dangers and impacts and a screening of a series of interviews with female survivors of the bombing.
Speaking after the event Matt Hawkins, Project Officer at ICAN-UK, said:
“We can never forget the appalling loss of life suffered in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The realisation of the devastation that humans can cause must remain with us. That is why it is so uplifting to see people of all generations and backgrounds here today to remember and reflect on the bombings of Japan, even on this very sombre day. The message of humanity must continue to be spread as must the lessons of those who suffered so much 71 years ago.”
